In a significant development this week, five USJE delegates to the PSAC’s National Bargaining Conference were chosen as members of bargaining teams for the PA, SV and EB groups. This represents the first time in the past fifteen years that USJE has had so many members on PSAC bargaining teams.
Now that tax filing season is in full swing, PSAC wants to remind its members in the federal public service about some important information regarding Phoenix-related tax implications.
In January 2018, USJE encouraged all members to ensure they had an updated profile with us so that USJE could more easily share our updates and news with you. Names of all members who had an updated profile were entered into our draw—with members receiving extra entries when they liked our page on Facebook or followed us on Twitter.
In response to pressure from PSAC, the federal government has finally agreed to halt recoveries of overpayments, emergency salary advances (ESA) and priority payments until employees’ pay files have been cleared of all outstanding transactions. This means employees will receive any and all funds they are owed before they must reimburse the employer for any overpayments or emergency pay.

The 2018 Federal Budget was released on Tuesday, February 27th, and there are a number of items that would, if properly implemented by the government, result in positive benefits to the members of the Union of Safety and Justice Employees (USJE).
Thanks to the efforts of so many people — including many USJE members — the federal budget has allocated funds to reopen the Collins Bay and Joyceville prison farms. USJE believes that all prison farms should be reopened and that this is a good start!
The federal government is going to scrap a “flawed” and “unacceptable” pay system that struggled to deliver pay to public servants, despite a price tag that will likely exceed $1 billion, Finance Minister Bill Morneau announced in his new budget tabled Tuesday in Parliament.
As many remember, Sister Tanisha Pascal-Nelson of Toronto CSC Community Parole passed away in 2017, survived by husband Sean Nelson and her four beautiful children, Elijah, Nathaniel, Promise and Fiza. In her memory, members across all regions and departments of USJE raised money to assist in funding Tanisha’s children’s education.
The PSAC National Board of Directors has called for a National Day of Action for February 28 to mark the second anniversary of the shockingly dysfunctional Phoenix Pay system.
